Barack and Michelle Obama served as producers on the film adaptation after the former president included Rumaan Alam’s novel on his annual reading list
On Netflix’s Leave the World Behind, not only did writer-director Sam Esmail have “the Michael Jordan of acting” as his star, but he also had a different Chicago legend as his star producer.
Back in 2021, former President Barack Obama put Rumaan Alam’s novel, Leave the World Behind, on his annual summer reading list, and now, through their production company, Higher Ground, he and First Lady Michelle Obama serve as producers on the film adaptation of the psychological thriller.
“To see the opening titles of the film and see the President and First Lady listed as executive producers, it’s baffling,” Alam tells The Messenger. “I’m just determined to enjoy it and feel really proud.”
But the Obamas were far from just producers in name only. Starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali, Leave the World Behind follows an upper-class New York family whose vacation is interrupted by two strangers and a mysterious cyberattack. The former President was already a fan of Esmail, having previously requested early access to episodes of the filmmaker’s Emmy-winning series Mr. Robot while still in office, and they quickly bonded over their shared passion for film and Alam’s source material…
