IDF strikes Hamas targets, shuts fishing zone as violence continues

The IDF struck multiple Hamas targets throughout the Gaza Strip overnight Saturday and into Sunday in response to incendiary balloon attacks and rocket attacks, as well as explosive devices that had been thrown at the border fence during Palestinian riots.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories announced Sunday that it was closing the fishing zone off the Gaza Strip in response to this latest escalation.

“Following security consultations, Minister of Defense Benny Gantz has approved the recommendation of the Chief of Staff, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, and security officials, and has ordered to entirely shut down the fishing zone of the Gaza Strip, immediately and until further notice, starting this morning (Sunday),” COGAT said. “This is following the rocket fire tonight, the continued launching of incendiary balloons from the Gaza Strip toward the Israeli citizens, and the undermining of security stability.”
It added that, “The State of Israel will react forcefully and in an uncompromising manner to any act of terrorism which hurts the citizens of the State of Israel and its sovereignty, and will continue doing so for as long as it takes. Hamas is accountable for all that is done in the Gaza Strip, as well as for actions launched from Gaza against Israel. Therefore, Hamas will have to bear the consequences of the violence committed against the citizens of Israel as long as the security calm doesn’t remain.”

The strikes were carried out in two rounds. In the first event, IDF fighter jets and aircraft targeted a Hamas military compound and underground infrastructure.

In response, Hamas fired a round of rockets, injuring five people.

Two women were mildly injured en route to their bomb shelter, two other women were treated for shock and a 58-year-old man was mildly injured when shrapnel hit his home, Magen David Adom reported.

During the second strike, the IDF attacked a weapons storage facility in the southern area of the strip.

“IDF fighter jets and aircraft recently attacked additional targets belonging to Hamas targets in the southern Gaza Strip,” the statement added, confirming initial Palestinian reports.

Prior to the second IDF strike, the Iron Dome intercepted two rockets sent from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory.

Injuries were also reported on the Hamas side of the fence by Palestinian media, though no official reports were released by the IDF. Those injuries occurred during the riots on the border fence late Saturday night. Palestinian media said that soldiers fired live ammunition and gas grenades at the rioters.

At least two Palestinians were taken to hospital, Israel Hayom reported, citing the Gaza Health Ministry.

Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum warned that the wounding of a number of rioters along the border overnight was a “crime” and that “Israel is fully responsible for the results and consequences of this escalation.”
Defense Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz warned that the IDF would “respond forcefully to any violation of [Israel’s] sovereignty until complete quiet is returned to the south.”
“If it’s not quiet in Sderot, it won’t be quiet in Gaza either,” stressed Gantz.

Clashes have been ongoing for more than a week. On Saturday alone, incendiary balloons caused at least 30 fires in southern Israel.

In recent years, countless incendiary and explosive balloons have been launched by Gaza’s terrorists. They sometimes have books or toys attached to lure children. Some have sparked large wildfires, including damaging thousands of hectares of crops.

Following the recurrence of incendiary or explosive balloons launching into Israel, warnings were given to balloon units in Gaza by Israeli officials who stated that if attacks don’t stop, then action will be taken. Despite the warnings, balloons were continuously launched.

On Tuesday, the IDF put a stop to the passage of all but essential humanitarian supplies into Gaza at the Kerem Shalom Gaza crossing in response to previous incendiary balloon attacks. The effort seemingly failed as balloon attacks continued, leading to the Defense Ministry to try and quell the attacks on Thursday by halting the transfer of fuel into the Gaza Strip.
Earlier in the weekend on Friday night, the IDF announced that it struck a Hamas naval force compound, underground infrastructure and observation posts.
