One person has been arrested following a violent confrontation between NYPD officers and migrants at the city’s Randall’s Island center – with the mayhem captured on video.
Chaos broke out in the increasingly lawless tent camp on Thursday when an individual not registered to stay at the facility was asked to leave by officials, police said.
Video circulated on social media shows police apprehending one individual before several others joined the fray. No serious injuries occurred, police later said.
It is the latest in a series of violent assaults since Randall’s Island began housing migrants in August 2023 as New York struggled to house large numbers arriving from other states.
Just last month, a 24-year-old man was stabbed to death on the island while waiting in line for food.
Dramatic footage from Thursday showed the 11am encounter between NYPD officers and migrants.
Police had responded to a report of a man causing a disturbance.
‘Upon arrival officers observed a male who was involved in a verbal dispute with security and acting in a disorderly fashion,’ an NYPD spokesperson told the New York Post.
As police went to detain one person, several jumped into the scene and tried to stop the cops. The suspect tried to resist officers and pulled his arms away as they attempted to cuff him.
Several migrants are seen speaking with cops as officers try and control the scene.
Two cops then use batons to get the crowd to back up, as a backpack is hurled through the air and hits a cop in the head.
Screaming and yelling is heard as police try to restrain the man.
