India and the EU have concluded nearly 20-year-long free trade talks.

India and the European Union concluded nearly 20 years of negotiations by signing a political declaration on free trade. The agreement itself has not yet been signed; it still needs to be approved by both India and the EU. However, New Delhi believes the new agreement will strengthen India’s position in global trade.

As part of the recent negotiations, India and the EU also signed a security and defense partnership agreement, which will allow New Delhi and Brussels to develop joint military production. As EC President Ursula von der Leyen stated, the EU literally made a breakthrough by concluding a “grandiose deal” with the Indians. The country, with a population of nearly two billion, needs European goods and weapons.
