Death toll in Iran protest crackdown is ‘over 5,000’ as Trump says US ‘armada’ on way

The death toll in Iran’s brutal crackdown on nationwide protests has skyrocketed to a staggering 5,002 people, activists have revealed, as fears grow that many more lives have been lost in the country’s most severe internet blackout in history, which has now surpassed the two-week mark.

The challenge of obtaining information from Iran continues to persist due to authorities cutting off internet access on Jan. 8, even as tensions between the United States and Iran reach boiling point. An American aircraft carrier group is moving closer to the Middle East, a force that U.S. President Donald Trump described as an “armada” in comments to journalists late Thursday, reports Associated Press.

The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported that of the 5,002 people killed, 4,716 were demonstrators, 203 were government-affiliated, 43 were children, and 40 were civilians not participating in the protests. The group also revealed that more than 26,800 people have been detained in a rapidly expanding arrest campaign by authorities…
