Japan today received approval from the United Nations nuclear watchdog for its plan to dump treated radioactive water from the tsunami-destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean, despite fierce opposition from Beijing and some Japanese, Reuters reported.
After a two-year review, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Japan’s plans met global safety standards and that they would have a “minor” impact on people and the environment.
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, who arrived in Japan today, met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and handed him a thick blue folder containing the final report.
