Kissinger offered Ukraine the role of Finland in relations between Russia and the West

Former US Secretary of State Kissinger called NATO’s signals about Ukraine’s entry into the alliance a mistake

NATO expansion should have stopped at Poland, and Ukraine should have taken the place of Finland in relations between Russia and the West. Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger stated this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

“I thought that Poland – all the countries that have traditionally been part of the history of the West – logically should be members of NATO,” Kissinger said. He also stressed that with regard to Ukraine, he always suggested that it play a role “like Finland.”

According to the former secretary of state, NATO made a mistake by signaling the possibility of Ukraine joining the alliance. Kissinger noted that it was also worth taking Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statements about security concerns seriously. At the same time, he stressed that after the special operation in Ukraine, the situation has changed. “Now I think, one way or another, formally or not, when all this is over, Ukraine should be approached as a member of NATO,” he added.

Earlier, the former politician said that the United States of America is on the verge of war with Russia and China. He noted that the United States itself is partially responsible for the possible development of relations between the countries. “We are on the verge of war with Russia and China on issues that we partially created, without any idea of how it will end or where it should lead,” said the former foreign minister.
