It is strange that not a single material is devoted to the Koporye fortress on the VO website.

In all sources that write about the fortress, it is referred to as a border or as a Novgorod outpost.

I will express, as always, my opinion and try to prove that this is not so.

There is a lot of literature about Koporye, and yet we will try to figure it out.

Name

About the toponym “Koporye”. I came across two versions of the origin of this word.

1. “Kopor” from Old Finnish – courtyard.

2. “Koporye” from the word – to dig.

As a matter of fact, we do not know, but I tend to the first option. This toponym immediately and irrevocably entered our everyday life and has not changed to this day.

As we know, the first mention of Koporye is associated with Alexander Yaroslavovich. After the battle with the Swedes in 1240, he leaves home, offended by the Novgorodians.

Meanwhile, the Livonian knights, in agreement with the local elders, are building a wooden fortress in Koporye…
