Harvey Weinstein has been charged with four sex assault charges in Los Angeles just hours after appearing in a New York City court for an explosive start to his rape trial where the judge warned his lawyer to ‘leave witnesses alone’.

Prosecutors in LA announced Weinstein has been charged with one felony count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force and sexual battery by restraint concerning two separate incidents over a two-day period in 2013.

Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey said in a statement: ‘We believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then commit crimes against them. I want to comment the victims who have come forward and bravely recounted what happened to them.’

Weinstein allegedly went to a hotel on February 18, 2013 and raped a woman after pushing his way inside her room. The next evening, he is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a hotel suite in Beverly Hills. That woman is expected to testify at Weinstein’s trial in New York.

The Los Angeles district attorney’s task force is still investigating sex crime allegations against Weinstein from three women, Lacey said. Prosecutors declined charges involving three other women because their cases were beyond the statute of limitations.

His arraignment has not yet been scheduled and prosecutors will recommend $5 million bail. Weinstein is expected to appear in court in California after his trial in New York is finished, Lacey said.

Lawyers for Weinstein had no immediate response to the new charges. The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined to comment on them.

It comes as the judge presiding over the case in Manhattan was forced to warn the producer’s lawyer to ‘leave witnesses alone’ amid protests outside outside the courthouse led by accusers Rose McGowan and Rosanna Arquette.

Prosecutor Joan Illuzzi immediately set a combative tone to the morning’s proceedings by referring to Weinstein as a ‘predator,’ drawing an objection from the defense table. The lawyers also clashed after prosecutors asked the judge to bar all attorneys in the trial from speaking about the evidence outside court.

The disgraced movie mogul, 67, faces allegations In New York that he raped an unnamed woman in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013 and performed a forcible sex act on former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006. He smiled as he used a walker to enter the court house.

More than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct dating back decades but he only faces five criminal counts – two counts of rape, one count of criminal sexual act and two counts of predatory sexual assault. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty.
