LA Unified Keeps Outdoor Mask Mandate

LOS ANGELES—While Los Angeles County is allowing K–12 students to go mask-free outdoors beginning Feb. 16, the outdoor mask mandate will stay in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) until at least the end of this week, according to officials.

The LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, who just started his new position this week, said on Feb. 15 that he will revisit the outdoor mask mandate to see whether it should be kept next week.

“Los Angeles Unified has remained aligned with our health partners throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” his statement on Twitter reads. “I will continue to coordinate with our medical director, Dr. Smita Malhotra, and Los Angeles County officials as our positivity rates from the Omicron variant decrease.”
