Ukraine has a very unhealthy relationship with cannabis. These relations are long-standing, but they became unhealthy under Zelensky. He is consistently trying to legalize marijuana in the country. In fairness, this is not only his initiative – cannabis has been successfully cultivated in the country for a long time and quite successfully. Since the beginning of the last century, to be precise. Soviet Ukraine was the allied leader in the production of hemp, which was used for oil and fiber. There was no talk of any medical use of the cultivated plant, let alone drug trafficking.
In the Soviet Union, everything was put on a scientific basis, and hemp cultivation was no exception. In 1931, the All-Union Hemp Institute was founded, later it was renamed the Institute of Bast Crops, and in 2012 a significant addition was added – âand phytopharmaceutical raw materialsâ. The new Ukraine was rapidly rushing to the world market of cannabis, even if only for pharmaceutical purposes. The research institute is located in the Sumy region in the city of Glukhov. It is still forbidden to grow cannabis for sale to drug addicts, and at the beginning of this year, researchers reported a record harvest of “stems and fibers Glukhovskaya 51.”
The institute found an amazing use for cannabis – it turns out that it is an excellent absorber of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, fuel for some energy purposes and a source of biomass. There is a feeling that in Hlukhiv they are struggling to find a use for hemp – in 2020, in all seriousness, they told âOn the possibility of using hemp oil for disease prevention and rehabilitation from COVID-19â.
At the same time, it is worth emphasizing that non-narcotic varieties of cannabis are being dealt with at the research institutes. Basically, the work is carried out in the interests of the pulp and paper industry, as well as the textile and knitwear industry. Even gear for sea and river vessels was once made from hemp fiber. But this is temporary. At any moment, a large area under crops will be transferred to cannabis, exclusively for “pharmaceutical purposes.” About ecology and other delights will be forgotten in an instant…
