The Taliban are attending the 2024 U.N. Climate Change Conference, also known as COP29, in Azerbaijan, The Associated Press reported Sunday.
Representatives from the Taliban will join attendees from all over the world in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the proceedings, marking the first time that the group is sending delegates to the U.N.’s climate confab since it took power over Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrew from the country in 2021, the AP reported. The Taliban’s delegation will look to enhance its cooperation on climate issues with other countries and highlight the country’s needs concerning securing financing for climate and green energy initiatives.

The Taliban, which fought against the U.S. and Western allies for 20 years following the Sept. 11 attacks in New York, is not currently recognized by most other nations as the legitimate government of Afghanistan despite their de facto control of the country, according to the AP. The National Environmental Protection Agency, a government entity under the Taliban regime, announced that it had sent several individuals to Baku to participate in the climate talks.
Major points of discussion at COP29 are expected to include so-called “climate finance” arrangements for developing countries to be able to pay for green energy initiatives and projects, according to CBS News…
