The Indian Air Force has cancelled its plan to purchase the Russian Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft as part of its plan to replace its fleet of earlier Il-76 aircraft, which are scheduled to be phased out by 2035.
The Russian platform was excluded due to persistent concerns about its operational readiness level, which does not meet the Air Force’s 75% threshold for transport fleet
– the IDRW publication says, citing sources.
The Indian Air Force currently operates 17 Il-76 aircraft, which were purchased from the USSR in the early 1980s.
These four-engine heavy-duty military transport aircraft, capable of carrying up to 48 tons of cargo over a distance of up to 4000 km, have become indispensable assistants in a wide variety of missions: from troop transport and disaster relief to the transportation of heavy equipment such as artillery и Tanks, to the high-altitude bases in Ladakh
