Mexican drug kingpin Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, who co-founded Sinaloa cartel, in US custody with El Chapo’s son: sources

Two leaders of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, including the son of notorious former drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, were arrested on US soil Thursday, authorities said.

Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, co-founder of the cartel, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez – El Chapo’s son –  were detained in El Paso, Texas on charges related to the sprawling drug trafficking organization, the US Justice Department announced.

“The Justice Department has taken into custody two additional alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

The pair face multiple charges in the US “for heading the Cartel’s criminal operations, including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks.”
