An illegal alien from Mexico has been charged in connection with a fatal collision that claimed the life of a man operating a lawn mower in Louisiana this weekend, authorities say.

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday night at around 9 p.m. in Avoyelles Parish.

Local resident Rickey G. Maddox, 59, was riding a Kubota lawn mower on the shoulder of Louisiana Highway 1 when a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck veered from the lane of travel and crashed into Maddox’s machine.

Maddox was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries.

On Monday, Louisiana State Police (LSP) arrested Romero H. Roberto, a 34-year-old citizen of Mexico who was living illegally in Alexandria, LA.

He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash but emerged unscathed, LSP says.

Roberto was charged with vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, careless operation, no driver’s license, and expired license plate.

Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against the Mexican, who entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown location and date.
