National Association for Gun Rights Urges Naperville City Council to Scrap “Assault Weapons” Ban

By Jose Nino

On May 2, 2023, representatives from the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) and the National Foundation for Gun Rights (NFGR) testified in front of the City Council of Naperville, Illinois to pressure elected officials, especially recently elected members of the council, to repeal the city’s so-called “Assault Weapons” ban.
NAGR and NFGR are currently involved in a prolonged legal fight against both the city of Naperville and the State of Illinois on behalf of Robert Bevis, a Naperville gun store owner whose business has been negatively impacted by these bans.
Owing to a recent stay of enforcement against the state-wide prohibition, Bevis’s business is one of the only gun stores in Illinois that can’t sell some of the most popular and commonly-owned rifles in the nation due to Naperville’s continued enforcement of this unconstitutional gun control ordinance.

On May 1, the US Supreme Court hinted at its desire to issue an Injunction Pending Appellate Review. If this injunction is granted, the enforcement of both the state and local laws would be stopped.

NAGR and NFGR are calling on the Naperville City Council to repeal the “assault weapons” ordinance in order for NAGR’s ongoing efforts against the statewide ban to proceed without Bevis’s store being forced to close down and without violating the Second Amendment rights of Naperville residents.
