The Dutch government in The Netherlands has officially collapsed this past week, with the controversial Prime Minister Mark Rutte announcing his resignation, leaving the door open for a new Prime Minister in the upcoming elections this fall.
The collapse came when the parties were unable to reach an agreement on the issue of immigration and asylum, a hot button topic for many European states.
āRutteās VVD and the CDA had been pushing for a tightening of restrictions after more than 45,000 asylum applications were lodged in the country last year ā with the same again expected this year ā leading to a saturation of asylum and social services in major Dutch cities,āĀ ReMixĀ reported.
