The grandfather of Idaho shooter Wess Roley thinks he knows what may have set his grandson off to the point that he decided to take the lives of two firefighters and nearly kill a third with a high-caliber rifle.
Roley, 20, presented no suspicion to his family about his plans, carried out Sunday, to set a brushfire and gun down firefighters who responded to the blaze. In fact, the young man had ambitions of one day becoming a first responder himself, his grandfather revealed.
“He actually really respected law enforcement,” the alleged shooter’s grandfather, Dale Roley, told NBC News.
“He loved firefighters. It didn’t make sense that he was shooting firefighters. I know he had been in contact to get a job with a fire department. He wanted to be part of a team that he sort of idolized.”
The Roley family lives in Coeur d’Alene, a small town in Northern Idaho near Canfield Mountain, where the shooting took place. Shortly before he began firing on the town’s firefighters, Roley made a chilling final post on Instagram.
