The main change was the replacement of the existing Soviet Ural-375D chassis with the German MAN TGM 6×6. This allegedly not only increased cross-country ability and ease of use, but also added additional space to the installation, which allows for the placement of ammunition. This provides the launcher with capabilities similar to the Czechoslovakian RM-70, increasing its autonomy. In addition, the BM-21 received a new digital FCS.
