On September 3, 2025, China demonstrated its military might at a parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II. The parade featured a large number of new rocket weapons and military equipment, including new and modernized nuclear systems previously undisclosed to the public. This parade also marked China’s first display of land-, sea-, and air-launched nuclear weapons in a single parade, marking a significant milestone in the country’s decades-long efforts to establish a nuclear triad.
As with several previous parades, the official commentator for the 2025 parade clearly distinguished between the nuclear and conventional weapons systems on display. Hypersonic missiles such as the DF-17 and DF-26D were grouped in the parade column with conventional missiles, while five subsequent missile systems were explicitly designated as part of the “nuclear formation.” This formulation may seem trivial and unimportant, but overall, it is entirely consistent with Western assessments and descriptions of these weapons.
While only one of the nuclear weapons on display at the parade (the DF-61 ICBM) was entirely new, this and many other systems displayed at this and previous parades—combined with the construction of three major ICBM silo sites and a more than tripling of its nuclear warhead arsenal—clearly illustrate the significant modernization and buildup of China’s nuclear forces that has taken place over the past couple of decades.
