North West farm murder: ANC told to ‘take responsibility’ for brutal killing

Emotions are running high in North West, after an elderly resident became the latest victim of a farm murder in South Africa. Even the ANC are being blamed.

An elderly couple from North West were attacked by a gang of thugs in an alleged farm murder this week, at their property in Leeufontein. Schalk “Willie” van der Merwe, 67, was stabbed with a “sharp instrument” by the criminals, and he sadly died as a result of the injuries. His partner Lettie is in a critical condition in hospital.

It’s believed at least four attackers gained access to the property, after initially posing as locals who wanted to purchase sheep. They pretended to seal a deal for the couple’s livestock, but quickly overpowered them when they got what they wanted. Schalk was killed in the kraal while Lettie was taken home to unlock the safe, where she was badly assaulted.

A close family member has shared his devastation over the farm murder through his Twitter account. Louis Snyman said that he has been left shocked by a crime that’s “hit close to home”:

With tensions at the boil, those affected are looking for someone to blame. Local police have already begun their investigation into this heinous attack, but Jacqueline Theologo wants much more than that. The DA’s North West Spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Development places the blame on the ANC’s doorstep.
