The Northern Lights could be visible across parts of 20 U.S. states after dark on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, according to a forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
The forecast is for a G2-level geomagnetic storm as Earth’s magnetic field responds to a coronal mass ejection — a cloud of charged particles — that left the sun in the wake of an M7.1 solar flare on Wednesday, Dec, 31. According to Spaceweather.com, Earth may receive an almost-direct-hit CME on Jan. 2 or Jan. 3. It’s also thought that another CME could arrive, with combined effect causing a G2 geomagnetic storm.
“By late on 02 Jan to early on 03 Jan, the arrival of the 31 Dec CME is expected to cause unsettled to G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) storming,” said NOAA…
