Now France Is More American Than America?

By Nicky Billou

President Emmanuel Macron of France has warned that American woke ideology threatens the rich culture and identity of France. In a statement issued earlier this week, Macron denounced wokism and rallied the French nation to reject it and its central tenets. French intellectuals, academics, politicians, artists and other key cultural figures rallied to Macron, and denounced wokism and declared that it has no place in France. Amazingly, French leftists are even more adamant than rightists in their denunciation of wokism and its danger to France and to intellectual freedom.

Macron unequivocally denounced ‘radical’ ideas emanating from American universities and movies, and came out and said they are destroying American culture and freedom of thought and expression. He declared that France would never allow this to happen to its culture and its citizens ability to think and express themselves freely. France, he said, has a tradition of standing of liberty, and would stand strong against the illiberal strain of thought that has currently gripped American society and is erasing its 230+ year commitment tho freedom and free expression.

Lord Conrad Black of Cross Harbour, a leading intellectual and business figure on the right, wrote a lengthy piece in American Greatness in which he suggested that France would be the indispensable nation in the West to take on the wokist scourge and defeat it in the marketplace of ideas. He cites the example of General, and later President Charles De Gaulle of France defying American leadership and American ideas which it feels could “infect” the identity and culture of France in a negative way.

France, he says, has always been a nation that has stood for French values and ideals, and would not allow those to be erased by notions that originated elsewhere. France has always been very proud and conscious of its identity and alert to any encroachments by foreign ideas that could dilute it. Lord Black believes that if wokism is to be defeated in the marketplace for ideas, France will lead the way.

It is interesting to note that wokism is not flourishing in the former Eastern bloc, with Poland and Hungary in particular disdaining it and pushing back against it. Russia and China also are not fertile grounds for wokist ideology. In fact, the Chinese government just announced that they will be promoting ‘manly education’ for Chinese boys, with a strong emphasis on traditionally masculine virtues.

While American universities, Hollywood, and the media are under the sway of wokism, France and the French have made it clear that wokist ideology will be met with hostility in France. Macron even personally called the author of a wokist piece written in an American newspaper criticizing France for not being woke enough, and berated that individual for not understanding or ‘respecting’ France and the French way of thinking.

France is the first major Western country to push back hard against wokism, with the support of all of its major cultural institutions and leaders. It may very well lead the way for other Western nations to do the same.
