Israeli company Elbit Systems has shown a video of the Iron Fist active protection system testing, which shows successful operation against various attack targets – RPG grenades, ATGMs, FPV-drones, loitering munitions, BOPS.
Judging by the footage, the active protection system now protects armored vehicles from weapons aimed at their upper hemisphere, where they are most vulnerable. This required significant modifications to the system.
Whereas previously the radars only looked at the horizon, they now also look at the zenith. They detect drones even as they dive. Launchers, which previously only fired sideways, now have a higher elevation angle. Some launchers are mounted directly on the turret roof to cover the overhead “blind spot.” The active protection system (APS) has undergone a comprehensive software overhaul. New target profiles have been added to the software. In particular, the algorithms now analyze not only speed but also trajectory (for example, when diving). The Iron Fist software now has the ability to work in conjunction with jammers. EW.
