Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) has announced that it has successfully started removing spent nuclear fuel from the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the first step in a project to remove radioactive waste. A remotely operated robotic crane is being used to remove nuclear waste from the plant’s reactor. The device is equipped with two video cameras and a special gripper.
Each radioactive fragment, weighing less than three grams, is expected to be removed from the damaged reactor over the next few days and sent to a lab in Ibaraki Prefecture for detailed analysis. TEPCO plans to use the results of the analysis to determine how to remove about 880 tons of radioactive debris from the plant’s No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 reactors.
