On Sunday, an off-duty NYPD officer was found dead in her Bronx apartment due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the New York Daily News.
Officer takes her own life
The officer, whose identity has yet to be revealed, was discovered in her home around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning.
According to the Daily News, she was discovered in her apartment by her girlfriend, who also happens to be an officer with the NYPD.
The death of this officer comes on the tail end of a weekend that saw New York City ravaged by demonstrators protesting the death of 46-year-old George Floyd in Minnesota.
Pressures mount
Over the last few days, New York’s finest have found themselves the targets of violence at the hands of the very people they are sworn to protect.
There have been reports officers being attacked with Molotov cocktails, bricks, stones, and just about anything else the rioters were able to get their hands on.
For the most part, the NYPD has been left to handle this crisis on its own, as Mayor Bill de Blasio has reluctant to accept help from the National Guard for fear it would only make the situation worse.
Mental health crisis grows
Sadly, for more than a decade, there has been a disturbing trend developing in New York City regarding police officers and suicide.
Leadership within the department is aware of the problem and has endeavored to make sweeping changes when it comes to providing resources and assistance for officers who are facing mental health challenges.
In February of this year, ABC News reported that the NYPD was putting even more measures in place to help officers who were struggling with suicidal thoughts, an initiative sparked when a veteran detective took his own life.
We can only hope that the efforts being made by the NYPD and departments around the country will help prevent further officer suicides as these brave law enforcement professionals continue to serve on the front lines under extremely hostile conditions.
