The Independent EPA has confirmed the presence of butyl acrylate in the Ohio River basin
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is calling on Congress to take action in response to a train derailment earlier this month, which has sparked concerns of lasting environmental damage and health issues for residents.
Back on 3 February, a freight train derailed in the town of East Palestine, with 20 of the cars carrying hazardous materials.
As part of the clean-up operation and in a move to prevent a chemical explosion, officials carried out a controlled detonation which sent noxious black clouds billowing into the air.
On Tuesday, Mr DeWine said that the railroad was not required to notify Ohio about toxic chemicals travelling through the state because the majority of the cars didn’t contain a hazardous substance and so the train, overall, wasn’t classed as a “high hazardous material train”.
He branded this process “absurd”, saying that “Congress needs to take a look at how these things are handled”.
“We should know when we have trains carrying hazardous material that are going through the state of Ohio,” he added.
