Emo, located near the Minnesota border and housing approximately 1,300 residents, faced scrutiny following a 2020 request by Borderland Pride. This group sought a formal proclamation declaring June as Pride Month and also requested the raising of the rainbow flag. Despite a vocal desire for inclusivity expressed by supporters of the request, the Emo town council voted narrowly against it by a margin of 3-2. Mayor Harold McQuaker articulated his concern during council deliberations, contending that flying a flag in support of one group did not account for the representation of heterosexual individuals, per National Post.
