Something’s up! Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ordered all top U.S. military commanders, worldwide, to convene at Quantico Marine Corps Base next week for a no-notice meeting with no published agenda. To call this unprecedented might be an understatement. The order covers about 800 general officers and admirals, and each of the attendees is directed to bring their senior enlisted adviser with them; “All general officers in command in grade O-7 through O-10 and their general officer senior enlisted advisers are directed to attend within operational constraints.”
If the meeting is unprecedented, then so, too, is the bellyaching.
- “People are very concerned. They have no idea what it means,” one person said.
- “It will make the commands just diminished if something pops up,” a defense official said.
- Another person said ordering hundreds of military leaders to appear in the same location is “not how this is done.”
- “You don’t call GOFOs leading their people and the global force into an auditorium outside D.C. and not tell them why/what the topic or agenda is,” this person added, using an abbreviation for general officer or flag officer.
- “Are we taking every general and flag officer out of the Pacific right now?” one U.S. official said. “All of it is weird.”
There could be any number of purposes for the meeting, but the fact that no agenda has been announced and the senior noncommissioned officer from each command headed by a GOFO has been directed to attend indicates that personnel issues will be one subject under discussion. The lack of an agenda also suggests that something sensitive will be discussed, and Hegseth doesn’t want to confront a unified GOFO position, but instead may be seeking ideas…
