Policing in 2020: Chicago pizza employee writes ‘quit your job’ on cop’s receipt

By: Chris Elliot

CHICAGO, IL –A Chicago Police officer ordered over $60 worth of food on August 30th. When the officer received a receipt for that bill, he noticed that an employee wrote “quit your job” on the receipt.

The Chicago Police officer was in full uniform when he went into the restaurant, called Happy Camper, and ordered $65.89 worth of food from the store. When he received his bill he noticed the anti-cop message scrawled in pen across the top.

The officer promptly threw the food away after seeing the note, fearing that his food had been spit in or worse. According to the Daily Mail, a Facebook post about the incident said:

“A very dear friend of mine, placed a to go order at Happy Camper in Wrigley today. He is a Chicago Police Detective, and has to be in full uniform and riot ready at any time. 12-16 hr days 6-7 days a week.

“When picking up, he noticed this note left by the cashier [quit your job]. He still tipped, and was the gentleman that he always has been. He then walked outside, and threw his food in the garbage for fear someone spit in it.

“This is unacceptable. Everyone is entitled to their feelings and political views, but definitely not when it comes to a professional environment. Where did people learn to disrespect the people that are paying their bills? How can any business allow this to happen?

“I was always taught to leave any opinions or personal issues at the door when I walked in [to work], clearly there is a lack of management and professionalism in this establishment.”

Thankfully, reports came in that the Happy Camper took the incident seriously and took steps to verify that it occurred. After doing so, the company terminated the employee the next day.

The Happy Camper released a Facebook Post noting the incident, saying that they:

“Immediately took action to terminate the employee…Our company works incredibly hard to provide a positive and enjoyable experience for all customers.

“We sincerely and humbly apologize – the action of one does not accurately reflect who we are as a company. We have zero tolerance for any behavior that doesn’t give our customers the full respect they deserve.”

The company also posted a reply in their Facebook Post, which said:

“Please also know that Happy Camper has reached out to the police officer to personally apologize, offer a full refund and provide a gift card to his restaurant of choice. Thanks again to all of our customers for your understanding.”

It appears at quick glance that the vast majority of those that commented on the Happy Camper’s Post were supportive of the move to quickly terminate the employee. Although, there were a few that mentioned that the restaurant should be vocal in their support for law enforcement.

Others replies voice concern that the Happy Camper is just terminating the employee until the publicity goes away, and then will rehire her. Some also believe that there should have been some type of teachable moment other than firing the employee. Not sure how being terminated for doing something wrong is not a teachable moment, but who knows.

When police officers are first in training after getting out of the academy, they are typically taught something about restaurants from the wise seasoned veterans, never go out to eat when you cannot see the cook making your food. Unfortunately, this has been a risk to law enforcement for many years and typically only came when that person had been arrested or had a friend who had been in trouble in the past.

Now, with the anti-law enforcement sentiment that is out there, it is doubtful that someone would have to have had an encounter with a police officer to do something to their food.
