Russian forces launched their most brazen aerial assault on NATO territory yet, sending a swarm of drones deep into Polish airspace overnight. Poland responded with lethal force, marking the first time NATO aircraft have engaged potential threats within allied territory.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed the shocking scale of the incursion. “Polish airspace was violated by a huge number of Russian drones,” he announced on X. “Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down.”

The operation involved a multinational NATO response unprecedented in scope. Polish F-16 fighter jets worked alongside Dutch F-35 stealth fighters, Italian AWACS surveillance aircraft, and NATO refueling planes in a coordinated defense.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed eight drones participated in the attack, calling it “not just one ‘shahed’ that could be called an accident.” The Ukrainian leader shared images showing extensive damage across western Ukraine from the broader assault.

Early reports suggested a residential building in Wyryki, eastern Poland, sustained damage, though no injuries were reported. The incident forced temporary closures at major airports including Warsaw, Modlin, and Rzeszow, with Lublin remaining shut down.

NATO’s advanced Patriot air defense systems detected the incoming threat with their sophisticated radar arrays but held fire, allowing fighter jets to handle the intercept mission instead.

The alliance moved quickly to address the escalation. Tusk confirmed “constant contact” with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte as Poland called an emergency NATO council meeting. The gathering will focus on Article Five – the sacred obligation requiring all members to defend each other against attack.
