A strong majority of U.S. likely voters oppose the U.S. government using tax dollars to pay money to illegal alien families separated at the U.S., as the Biden Administration is, reportedly, proposing, two new national surveys reveal.
A Rasmussen survey of 1,000 U.S. likely voters, conducted November 4 and 7, asked:
“The federal Department of Justice is reportedly negotiating payments to settle a lawsuit brought by attorneys for immigrant families who were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border during the Trump administration. How much should the government pay these immigrants?”
Fully 57% of voters said the U.S. government should pay nothing, including 60% of white voters, and 58% of non-black minorities. Results were consistent among the vast majority of income, age, employment, gender and age categories.
- 57% of voters say the federal government should pay nothing to illegal immigrants.
- 14% think a settlement of in the $50,000-$100,000 range would be appropriate.
- 6% say the illegal aliens should get between $100,000 and $200,000.
- 6% say the illegal immigrants should receive more than $200,000 each.
- 17% say they’re “not sure.”
By party, 79% of GOP voters say the federal government should not pay anything, as do 67% of unaffiliated voters and 30% of Democrats, Rasmussen reports.
A survey of 1,086 U.S. likely voters, conducted November 1-4 by The Trafalgar Group, yielded similar results.
The Trafalgar survey asked specifically about paying the amount of $450,000:
“How do feel about the Biden Administration’s considering paying families of illegal immigrants separated at the southern border $450,000 each for ‘psychological trauma’?”
Among Hispanics, 59.4% either “strongly disapprove” (56.3%) or “disapprove” (3.1%) of paying illegal immigrant families separated at the border, the survey found.
Among all voters, 66.9% said they disapprove of the payment, included 56.0% who “strongly” disapprove:
- Strongly Approve: 8.7%
- Approve 10.0%
- Disapprove 10.9%
- Strongly Disapprove 56.0%
- No Opinion 14.4%
