A rare severe earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck near Melbourne in southern Australia with the epicenter near Mansfield in Victoria according to the Victoria State Emergency Services.
Buildings suffered some damage and power lines were disrupted in the central business district of Melbourne, Australiaās second largest city, where people could be seen on the streets following the quake.
Melbourne residents described their shock and surprise as houses across the city began to shake, in a city which has not had an earthquake of such size in at least many decades.
The quake was so strong it was felt as far away as Adelaide in South Australia, 800 kilometers (500 miles) away, and Sydney in New South Wales, more than 900 kilometers (600 miles) away.
Geoscience Australia also said there was an aftershock following the earthquake measuring about 4.0 in magnitude, less than half an hour after the initial shock.
It is rare for Australia to experience severe earthquakes since the country sits in the center of a tectonic plate and as a result very rarely experiences serious earthquake activity.
According to the research lead with the University of Melbourneās earthquake seismology earth sciences unit, this is probably the largest earthquake they have felt around Melbourne in the last 175 to 200 years.
And if the magnitude estimate of 6.0 holds, it will be the first in hundreds of years.
The seismologist additionally said that this is the first earthquake of this magnitude in this area that has been seen during the lifetime of several generations.
This current MelbourneĀ earthquakeĀ also comes after a day of heated protestsĀ in the city over strict months-long lockdowns which have been put in place to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 Delta variant.
Where demonstrators blocked off major roads and lit flares amid clashes with police, in some of the worst violent protests seen in the city in years.
The Australian prime minister Scott Morrison said āIt can be a very, very disturbing event for an earthquake of this nature ā¦ They areĀ very rare eventsĀ in Australia and as a result, I am sure people would have been quite depressed and disturbed by that, particularly in the most immediate area affected.ā
