Reuters: Iran opens door to direct talks with US in exchange for ‘goodwill gesture’ of sanctions relief

Tehran allows for the possibility of direct dialogue with Washington, but only if the American side takes steps to ease sanctions or unblocks some of Iran’s frozen assets, Reuters reports, citing an anonymous diplomat familiar with the position of the Islamic Republic’s authorities.

According to the agency’s source, the Iranian authorities expect a “goodwill gesture” from the US, expressed in concrete actions that would demonstrate a willingness to compromise, before agreeing to personal talks. In turn, Tehran is taking the upcoming indirect consultations in Oman with caution, skeptical about the chances for progress and expressing distrust of the intentions of the US administration.
