
Claims from Russian bloggers and Telegram accounts suggest that on September 23, Russian armed forces targeted the Ukrainian Motor Sich plant, which produces engines for military aircraft and drones, and repairs damaged equipment. These sources allege that at least one Iskander-K land-based short-range cruise missile struck the facility. Motor Sich is located in Zaporozhye.

Since the start of the Special Military Operation, Motor Sich’s production areas have faced multiple missile attacks. The recent strike reportedly hit a workshop specializing in UAV components. The last known attack on Motor Sich was in April this year, according to Russian reports.
Motor Sich PJSC, one of the world’s largest aircraft engine manufacturers, has a complex and lengthy history, particularly concerning its ownership and Chinese interest. In 2016, Chinese investors, including the company Skyrizon, initiated the acquisition of a substantial share in Motor Sich, seeking aircraft engine technologies to advance China’s aerospace sector. Skyrizon eventually secured about 50% of Motor Sich’s shares through various entities and structures.

However, when this deal came to light, it stirred up quite the controversy. Ukrainian officials voiced serious concerns over losing their strategic technology, especially given the ongoing tensions with Russia and the need to keep their defense industry autonomous. Under significant pressure from Ukrainian authorities and Western allies, the deal was ultimately blocked.
