Sailor found dead on USS Bataan prompts Navy investigation

A 19-year-old sailor died while on the USS Bataan last month, according to the Navy.

An investigation by the Navy is underway after the sailor, Amare Long, was found dead on the assault ship based in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 18.

“Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Amare Long, assigned to USS Bataan (LHD 5), was found deceased onboard the ship April 18, 2022. Our thoughts go out to his family and shipmates during this incredibly difficult period, and we would ask that their privacy be respected at this time,” said Jason Fischer, spokesman for Naval Surface Force Atlantic, in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

Long’s cause of death was not immediately disclosed. The investigation into his death is being led by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
