SB 179…Transferring Education to an Unelected Governor Appointed Bureaucrat

BY CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Brian Massie, Citizen Journalist, Lake County, Ohio

Thanks to Kirsten Hill of Lorain County for making us aware of the possible changes to the Ohio State Board of Education. Governor DeWine, a Republican, continues to baffle us by taking away the citizens’ role in electing those that control our destiny. With an unelected bureaucrat we would have no say in Ohio education. Home schooling would be in danger of being eradicated in favor of a State mandated indoctrination system. Think that it cannot happen – just ask the citizens of Germany. Very bad idea!

URGENT – Ohio Legislative Alert – Immediate Action Needed

November 28, 2022

Melanie Elsey, Legislative Liaison for Christian Home Educators of Ohio

OHIO LEGISLATION POSITIONED TO MOVE ALL MAJOR DUTIES OF THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO AN UNELECTED APPOINTEE OF THE GOVERNOR. (This will affect all school age children – public, private, and home educated!)

SB 178

Sponsor: Senator Bill Reineke

Introduced: May 11, 2021

SB178 (link below) has been sitting dormant in the Ohio Senate Primary and Secondary Education Committee since its introduction last year. It now appears there will be an effort to push it through the legislative process before the end of the session.

SB178 will move all of the major policy decisions of our partially elected State Board of Education to a new NON-ELECTED cabinet agency under the sole authority of the Governor and will REMOVE ALL ELECTED REPRESENTATION on all regulations affecting public schools, private schools, and home education.

This bill is identical in concept to the 2018 bill, HB512, which did not pass due to substantial public outcry.

What makes the process more challenging today is that there is NO language available to the public for review of SB178. The only available version of the bill, at the writing of this alert, is a one-page placeholder version expressing nonspecific intent. Similar legislation in 2018 (HB512) was over 2000 pages in length.
