South Korea has decided to abandon the development of its own nuclear weapons. Defense Minister Ahn Kyu-baek stated at a briefing after a meeting with Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth: Seoul remains a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has no plans to launch its nuclear program.
However, between the lines of his statement, a somewhat different message was read: “We want serious power behind us.” He acknowledged that he had asked Washington to consider the option of returning American tactical nuclear weapons to the peninsula.
These demands didn’t come out of nowhere. Amid reports that Trump had allowed South Korea to reprocess spent nuclear fuel, many in Seoul suddenly felt they had additional leverage. True, they had asked for it themselves, and “peacemaker” Trump couldn’t refuse…
