Six U.S. Capitol Police officers were suspended without pay, as 35 undergo an investigation related to the riot on Jan. 6 that left several people dead, according to the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
Several officers were suspended after the incident, and one officer, 42-year-old Brian Sicknick, died after injuries he suffered facing rioters.
“Our Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the actions of 35 police officers from that day,” a spokesperson said. “We currently have suspended six of those officers with pay. Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman has directed that any member of her department whose behavior is not in keeping with the Departmentâs Rules of Conduct will face appropriate discipline.”
Pittman took over the agency after former Chief Steven Sund resigned on the day of the riot, following calls by lawmakers, such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to step down from his post.
Rioters stormed the Capitol building after attending a pro-Trump rally in protest of Congress certifying President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
Former President Donald Trump was impeached by the Democratic-led House on a charge of “incitement of insurrection” but was later acquitted by the Senate. It was the second time Trump faced impeachment, the first of which had the same outcome of Senate acquittal.
Over 250 people have been so far charged in connection with the events of Jan. 6, and investigators say they’re still potentially looking for hundreds more who had a role.
Thousands of National Guard members who flew into Washington, D.C., to secure the city after the riot remain in the district. A Pentagon spokesman said troops should be departing the nation’s capital by mid-March.
