South Africa – ‘Satanic earrings’ blamed for causing pupils to hallucinate at KZN school

By Andile Moshoeshoe

Earrings that are believed to have been sold or distributed to pupils of Franklin Senior Secondary, outside Kokstad in the southern part of KwaZulu-Natal, are alleged to be the reason behind the hallucinations purportedly caused evil spirits, which “attacked” pupils during the school’s assembly recently.

Teaching and learning at the school has, for the past two weeks, been disrupted as some of the pupils jumped and screamed during assembly.

The earrings, which are said to have either been sold or given to pupils by herdsmen working at a local farm, have since set tongues wagging around a village as a result of the chain of events that followed.

Franklin principal, Bambezakhe Aubrey Mbutho, confirmed to have also heard the matter of the “satanic” earrings.

He said the matter was even raised during a school governing body (SGB) meeting last week. He said it was alleged that some herdsmen are distributing “satanic” earrings to pupils to make them scream once they remove them from their ears.

“We have resorted to consulting the local councilor and the municipality organized different church denominations to come and pray at the school and you (referring to the reporter) have witnessed some screaming in front of you during prayer,” said Mbutho.

One of the parents, who asked not to be named, said the earrings are alleged to be coming from Johannesburg and are used by the local herdsmen to seduce pupils into getting into romantic relationships with them.

“Once a girl wears them, they cannot be removed because they work as a device to control them. The problem started when the pupils wore them to school,” said the parent.

She also revealed that the earrings are gold plated and have either a cross sign, heart or a crescent moon shape.

“When the child starts screaming, she cannot even borrow an earing from a friend to calm down, she needs her own,” said the parent.

SGB chairperson, Bheki Nozaza, said some local herdsmen approached the school on Monday to meet the principal because they wanted to cleanse their names, but unfortunately, the principal had a meeting at the regional office.

“We are waiting for them to come back anytime so that we can hear their side of the story because this (satanic earrings) is hearsay and people who know more about it are the pupils,” he said.

Rev Ayanda Mamgengu said this is purely Satanism and promised to continue praying if the screaming and hallucinations persist.

The local herdsmen could not be reached for comment.
