South Africa – World’s oldest crocodile, Henry, turns 124

KwaZulu-Natal proudly lays claim to hosting the world’s oldest Nile crocodile in captivity as Henry, the resident legend at Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh, celebrates his 124th birthday on Monday.

A beloved local icon and tourist attraction, Henry has spent decades captivating visitors with his massive size and remarkable history.

Born in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, in 1900, Henry’s life has been anything but ordinary.

In the early 1900s, he developed a fearsome reputation, reportedly preying on children from a local tribe.

In 1903, renowned hunter Sir Henry Neumann captured him, sparing his life but sentencing him to captivity.

Henry’s violent past is now a distant memory as he thrives in the peaceful surroundings of Crocworld Conservation Centre.

Brought to the centre in 1985, Henry has grown into a colossal 700 kg and 16 feet long, a size that has awed generations of visitors…
