Spain Sparks Criticism Using Bone Biometrics To Determine Migrants’ Ages

In order to analyze and determine the age of migrants from Africa, customs in Spain are using bone scans to accomplish this, but has drawn criticism from within the practice itself.

Last week, reported by Spanish paper La Provincia, general secretary of the Spanish Network for Immigration and Refugee Assistance, Rafael Escudero, defended this security measure and denounced the idea that the ‘determination of the age of an African minor by bone elements that does not guarantee the use of non-Western standards is “discriminatory and illegal,”‘ the outlet wrote.

Escudero further argued that “Western eyes” are critical of the technology and underappreciate what it provides, ‘ensuring that artificial intelligence and another series of facial recognition processes have already demonstrated this,’ the paper noted. “If illegal age determination procedures are carried out, social entities will challenge them,” he concluded.
