5.6 quake 29 Mar 9:11 am (GMT +2)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred only 6 minutes ago 79 km northwest of Kalamata, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 15.4 km beneath the epicenter near Kalamata, Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece, in the morning on Friday, March 29th, 2024, at 9:11 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Philiatra (pop. 7,000) located 31 km from the epicenter, Kyparissia (pop. 5,000) 37 km away, Gargalianoi (pop. 6,300) 39 km away, Zacharo (pop. 5,900) 44 km away, Pyrgos (pop. 22,400) 51 km away, Amaliada (pop. 16,800) 63 km away, and Kalamata (pop. 54,100) 79 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Patras (pop. 168,000) located 120 km from the epicenter.
Volcano Discovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
