Supermarket Chain Kroger Strips Away Paid Covid-19 Benefits And Slaps An Insurance Surcharge On Unvaccinated Employees

For a brief moment in time it felt like the Covid-19 pandemic was fading and we could restart our lives. Before we had time to savor this wonderful possibility, the Delta variant started surging in the U.S. around August, 2021.

During this time period, Delta airline’s CEO Ed Bastian wrote a memo to his employees laying out a tough policy for unvaccinated workers. In an internal corporate blog post Bastion wrote, “Since the earliest days of the pandemic, our No. 1 priority has always been to protect our people and customers.” To that end, “Beginning Nov. 1, unvaccinated employees enrolled in Delta’s account-based healthcare plan will be subject to a $200 monthly surcharge.”

He justified the surcharge saying that the average hospital stay for COVID-19 has cost the airline $50,000 per person, and the extra payments were required to address the potentially significant financial and health risks for the airline, it’s staff and passengers.
