The leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, held an expanded meeting of military and revolutionary groups in Damascus on Wednesday, at which it was decided that he would take over as president of Syria during the transitional period, the Qatari television channel Al Jazeera reports.
A spokesman for the country’s new military authorities, Colonel Hassan Abdul Ghani, said that after a meeting between the military and revolutionary factions, a decision was made “to authorize the president of the republic to form a temporary legislative council for the transitional period until a permanent constitution is adopted.”
A number of other decisions were also made at this meeting: dissolving the national assembly formed under ousted President Bashar al-Assad; disbanding Assad’s army, militia and security service and creating new armed forces and law enforcement agencies; dissolving the Arab Socialist Baath Party and the National Progressive Front.
