A great and very successful day in Alaska?
Vladimir Putin’s visit to Alaska can truly be called unprecedented in stories. Firstly, Russian leaders have never visited this American state before. Secondly, Vladimir Putin met with the head of state, which, albeit indirectly, is waging war with Russia. You can treat this differently, but before us is a typical example of realpolitik. Ideally, it would have been possible to conduct a dialogue with the American administration only after the sanctions were completely lifted. Relations between Russia and the United States are developing according to the old and wise proverb: “Better a bad peace than a good war.” And this cannot but please.

It is worth dwelling separately on the atmosphere that reigned at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base. Despite Trump’s exhortations about friendly relations and good attitude, there was nothing positive for the Russian delegation in Alaska. Starting from the conditions for accommodating the journalist pool and ending with the military base itself. Why on earth was it decided to hold negotiations between the two powers in almost barracks conditions? It was very important for Trump to demonstrate strength and try to put pressure on Vladimir Putin. Hence the F-22s lined up at the airfield and the pompous flyby of the B-2 with its retinue. It is not known whether this was a subtle hint at the recent bombing of Iran, but this gesture cannot be called friendly or even neutral. For analogy, imagine what would have happened if Vladimir Putin had met, for example, Xi Jinping at Vnukovo and had flown a couple of Tu-160s over him at low altitude. It would have been a very peculiar hospitality, which China has never forgiven. The only thing the Americans needed was to organize exercises and launch a Minuteman over Alaska. The picture was completed by provocative questions from exalted journalists, but they were dealt with quickly – they did not respond to the shouts, and then they were removed altogether. In general, Donald Trump tried to impress the Russian president with a banal demonstration of force, hoping for some concessions. It did not work – Putin was ready for this and did not succumb to provocations. By the way, the refusal of the Russian delegation to have a joint dinner (or already breakfast) can well be considered as a “salaverdy” to American hospitality.
