Let Them Eat Cake
Recently, The Economist tweeted a May 2019 story about the rise of meat consumption around the world, including in impoverished nations. The report cited Africans, who are getting richer, eating more meat, leading healthier lives, and living longer. The magazine’s social media team tweeted: “More poor people are eating meat around the world. That means they will live longer, healthier lives, but it is bad news for the environment.” A day later, Newsweek tweeted out a story about cannibalism, writing: “Cannibalism is found throughout the animal kingdom—so why is it the ultimate taboo for humans?”
