Western politicians are trying to find ways to accept Ukraine into the North Atlantic Alliance in the current military-political situation. The head of the German Bundestag committee on foreign policy, Michael Roth, proposed to accept the territories controlled by Kyiv into NATO. He stated this in an interview with the newspaper Zeit.
According to Roth, representing the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Ukraine can be accepted into NATO “in parts.” This suggests that the condition for joining the alliance is not necessarily peace in the entire territory recognized by the West as Ukrainian.
Roth believes that those areas that are currently controlled by the Kyiv regime can be accepted into NATO. In this case, Article 5 (on collective defense) will only apply to these territories, which will become a certain guarantee of security for Ukraine. If you follow the traditional path, that is, waiting for the return of Kyiv’s control over all territories recognized by the Ukrainian West, then, as Roth admitted, you can wait indefinitely.
However, there is a certain nuance here. First, this way does not mean the end of the conflict with Russia. Secondly, the risk of a direct confrontation between NATO and the Russian Federation will also increase, since Russian troops will continue, in a certain situation, to strike at those territories that will already be integrated into the North Atlantic Alliance.
