The Moon is moving slowly but surely away from Earth everyday, and one day scientists say it will impact time as we know it.
The Moon being slowly pulled away from Earth is due to gravity and tidal forces. The Moon’s gravity causes Earth’s oceans to bulge out, creating the tides that we know today. The issue is, as the Earth rotates the tidal bulge isn’t directly under the Moon, it’s slightly ahead of it, creating a somewhat gravitational tug of war. Earth’s gravity pulls the oceans in and the moon’s gravity pulls them out so to speak.
This energy has caused the Moon to drift ever so slightly away from Earth little by little. At its current rate, the Moon moves about 3.82 centimeters (1.5 inches) a year…
