The Russian Su-27 fighter was scrambled due to reports of two American B-1B strategic bombers approaching the Russian state border over the Baltic Sea. As a result, an attempt to violate the border was stopped.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, airspace control systems detected two unidentified air targets approaching the state border of the Russian Federation over the Baltic Sea. To identify air targets and prevent violation of the Russian state border, a Su-27 fighter from the air defense duty forces was immediately scrambled.
The Ministry of Defense also clarified that the crew of the Russian fighter identified the targets as B-1B strategic bombers of the American Air Force. When a Russian fighter approached, American military aircraft were forced to turn around and continue in the direction opposite to the Russian border. After stopping the attempt to violate the border, the Russian plane returned safely to its home airfield.
